12.12: The Day (2023) Movie Review: Should You Watch This Korean Hit?

Friends told me we were going to watch “12.12: The Day,” but I wasn’t too excited. But I didn’t feel bad at all after watching that history movie for two hours and thirty minutes. The movie is about the military coup that happened on December 12, 1979, and it shows that good doesn’t always win.

To be honest, I wasn’t too interested in the first half, but as it went on, I got excited. It’s not a happy ending, but it makes a strong impact. Some people might not find it interesting, but over 7 million people have watched it in Korea alone, so it must have a strong message. It serves as a warning that mistakes are bad and should not be repeated in the future.

The film is directed by Kim Sung-su, and stars Hwang Jung-min, Jung Woo-sung, Lee Sung-min, Park Hae-joon and Kim Sung-kyun. With this star-stubbed cast, this movie did well in South Korea. It became the biggest film of 2023 in Korea.

The movie’s great photography and intense sound design keep the tension high the whole time. The fact that the events were based on real events made the viewing experience better, even though I didn’t know the background behind them. Don’t miss this; it’s an interesting trip through a rough time.

“12.12: The Day” is most likely the best movie I’ve seen in the past year, or even five years. Even though I like small, independent movies better, this huge production and its fast pace kept me on the edge of my seat for more than two hours. The story, the acting, and the production are all great. The bad guy Chun Doo-gwang is especially well portrayed.

I really think you should watch it, even if you’re not Korean. What it says will stay with you forever. For Koreans, it’s an important part of their history—the bad parts that deserve to be remembered.
